“This was clearly one of the photography project’s goals: not only did they want us to turn our camera’s lenses on Valjevo and show them what we saw, they also wanted us to look inward on our own, preconceived notions of Serbia. Indeed, Serbia has long suffered from a poor reputation in the rest of Europe and abroad due to a legacy of politics, nationalism and war. However, by the end of the camp, the volunteers were able to take with them only the most positive impressions of this proud and hospitable country. It was a true pleasure to participate in this workcamp and I would gladly do so again.” Matthew Blong ~ 2009

"I was the only American in the work camp, and the rest of the volunteers were from Europe. The other volunteers represented the following countries: Greece, Spain, Italy, Belgium, France, Italy, England, Serbia, Russia, and Ukraine. I found the Serbian people very welcoming and inquisitive. The Serbian people treated the volunteers like family.  I was completely taken aback at the generosity of the Serbs.  They infrequently see tourists in Kragujevac, and very rarely see Americans. I think this is one part of the world that is relatively untouched by tourists. Because of that fact, I consider Serbia a very exotic place to travel. If there is another work camp in a similar urban area, I would definitely consider returning to Serbia. Although it is a landlocked country, I enjoyed it substantially more than my time in other parts of Europe. I think volunteers from the US would enjoy participating in a work camp in Serbia. I would urge them, however, to first educate themselves on the history of Serbia, and particularly the political changes that have occurred in the last few decades.  I highly recommend volunteering in Serbia."

C. Loes ~ 2009
