At Volunteers For Peace, we are always happy when families want to share the experience of volunteering for the benefit of others. It's a great way for each member to grow from.

However, there are not many options for families seeking placement.The following are the 2008 volunteer programs that accepted children accompanied by an adult or parents.

The VFP placement fee is fixed at $500 for any family regardless of size.

Äijälä Farm is situated near Jyväskylä in Central Finland.
The charming old farmhouse has been repaired to be a home for disabled people. The community wants to encourage the integration of disabled and so-called healthy people. Äijälä has been hosting KVT workcamps since 1980.

W: Gardening, hay-making, renovating an old building and household work. Work will be done together with the people living in Äijälä and also other disabled people from outside Äijälä.

X: Disabled vols, 30+ vols and families are especially welcome.

The purpose of Keuruu Ecovillage is to pursue a sustainable lifestyle, to cherish the diversity of nature and to preserve original plant and animal species in the woody countryside of Central Finland.

WORK: Construction, renovation, harvesting, gardening.

STUDY: Ecovillages in Finland and Europe.

Location: The Work Camps is located in the beautiful region of Georgia, Adjara – in Kobuleti on the shore of the Black Sea. The camp will take place only 120 m from the marvelous beach. Kobuleti  is the regional center of Adjara and is situated 25 km  from Batumi and 380 km from Tbilisi. Kobuleti is one of the famous and big climatic seaside resorts of Georgia. Kobuleti is notable for its unique medical properties not only in summer season, but even during the whole year. Warm and soft subtropical climate, fresh and clear air, sunlight, warm sea are healthy for the treatment from various cardiovascular, lung, windpipe, tubercular diseases and nervous system.

Accommodation:  In comfortable 2-floor cottage with an open balcony and a loggia on the 2nd floor. First floor: 5 rooms (4, 6, 3 beds), 1 shower, 1 toilet, 2 kitchens (inside and outside). Second floor: 6 rooms (3, 4, 4, 6 beds), 2 showers and 2 toilets. The cottage is supplied with constant gas, electricity and water.
Work activities (4-5 hours per day): Cleansing the beaches and the inshore part of the sea bottom, planting of trees and gardens.

Food: Volunteers will prepare the meals by the given food.

Leisure Time: Camp leaders will organize free time together with the participants: swimming in the black Sea, fishing, excursions in Batumi botanical garden and in the tee factory, herbaria collect. The cottages are endowed with piano, TV-sets, videos and games (domino, cards, chess and nards and lotto) and other cultural diversity (café, discotheque).

Germany

GerIjgd8120-08  Hohburkersdorf  27-Jul-08  to  09-Aug-08  FAMILY/EDU  10 V. Ages  18+ Fee:$300.00
Project: The Permahof aims to conduct agriculture in family business, which cares about nature and keeps it for future generations. It has two focuses ("develop agriculture" and "meeting place"), which shall make it an attractive place for the youth from the country and the city and for small and large guests from Saxon Switzerland. The Permahof works together with other institutions, like the schools of the regions, the environment-education club, "University in the Green" and the national park Saxon Switzerland.

This camp is a family camp (parents or grandparents with children), in which the children should be at least 5 years old, and are taken care of or can participate, while the parents and grand parents are working.

Work: The task is to create an energy-playground. There shall be formed a wind wheel, and a solar heater, where the kids can learn, what regenerative energy is. Additional there shall be built a hut of loam, as an accommodation for future events.

Accommodation: In a yurt, or some army tents on the Permahof. If necessary there are ovens for heating. Sanitary arrangements and a kitchen with a refrigerator are existent. Catering is done by the group. The Permahof supports the meals by its own crop.

Location: The Permahof is close to the national park Saxon Switzerland, in a beautiful landscape in Saxony. The way to Dresden and the little city of Pirna isn't far, so that you can have cultural alternatives. Trips over the Czech border are possible.

Train-station: Pirna, bus to Hohburkersdorf


Airport: Dresden, Berlin, Leipzig


Age: Parents or grand-parents with children who are at least 5 years old.

Special requirement: Knowledge of English or German language is required for the adults.

Italy

ItaSci06.5-08  Villa San Giovanni ~ Reggio Calabria  19-Jul-08  to  02-Aug-08  ENVI/RENO/FAMILY  20 V. Ages  18+ Fee:$300.00
The project AspromonteLiberaMente is organized by 6 schools of Reggio Calabria area, in cooperation with the National Park of Aspromonte and local associations. The main aim of the project is the environmental education and the recovery of the environmental resources. The "Aspromonte Liberamente" wants to convert ex military base USAF on Nardello Mountain in a scientific laboratory for the eco-sustainable development, for monitoring of the pollution, for experimentation of alternative energy and also a place as an astronomic observatory.

Work: Making new path from "Grotta dei Tamburinari" to Gambarie, and remaking of "Water path" with techniques of environmental engineering, their system of signs and information about the places. Jobs of maintenance in the hostel.

Study part: the history of the project with photos and videos.

Living conditions: Accommodation in a hostel which is situated in the montains (Nardello Mountain- altitude 1800m). From this place there is a fabulous panorama (a view to Sicily and Eolie's Islands). The volunteers are accommodated in the hostel but it is possible to pitch own tent and sleep outside. The structure is without running water and light. Water is provided by tanks and electricity by a generator in the evening. The bathrooms are inside the hostel but showers and washbasins are outside. Food will be prepared by the organizers of the camp (a traditional italian and regional kitchen- very good). The shifts of the volunteers will be responsible for daily tidying of the hostel and service in the kitchen. Workcamp is open for families. Not accessible for wheelchairs. The living conditions are not very comfortable but the atmosphere of the workcamp compensate at all the inconveniences.

Language:  English/ Italian, calabrian language , gesture. 

WHAT TO BRING: Mountain's wear (sweater, winter jacket ecc. ), trekking shoes, long trousers, torch, sleeping bag and a materace, summer clothes( bathing costume ).

ItaLegF01-08  Montevecchio  29-Jul-08  to  12-Aug-08  ENVI/FAMILY  9 V. Ages  18+ Fee:$500.00 Xtra Fee: $110.00 REPORT REFUND: $50.00
Project: Montevecchio is a small mining village situated 20 km far away from the Green Coast, one of the most charming coast of Sardinia which includes the reserve of  "Monte Arcuentu-Dune di Piscinas". The area is very interesting from the zoologist point of view, particularly for the presence of the Sardinian deer and the "Caretta caretta" turtle. Volunteers will collaborated in several activities: maintenance of a naturalistic footpath, position of signs, monitoring of the presence of the Sardinian deer, cleaning of the beach, fire prevention and other environmental restoration activities. There will be also small works to restore the hosting structure. The village is not on the cost, but excursions to sea will be possible.


Work: different environmental maintenance work and animal monitoring activities.


Accommodation: guest house


Location: Guspini, Cagliari district, Sardinia region, big Island on the west of Italy.

Terminal: closest international airport is Cagliari. Ferry connections from Genoa, Naples and Civitavecchia

Participants: 9 adults + 9 children (5 to 12 years old)

ItaLegF04-08  Bagni di Masino  13-Aug-08  to  24-Aug-08  ENVI/FAMILY  6 V. Ages  18+ Fee:$500.00 Xtra Fee: $110.00 REPORT REFUND: $50.00
Project "Foreste da Vivere" (Forests to live in), is a project which aims to promote the 23.000 hectars of Forests of Lombardia region through sport and cultural events, excursions and many other initiatives. Masino Valley, located in the Valtellina area (Sondrio province, very Northern Italy), is well known for the thermal water spring of "Bagni", and entirely surrounded by the Regional Forests. Masino Valley is important for being part of Natural Regional Parks and it's already in the European list of the Community Important Sites. Legambiente promotes the project in collaboration with the local organization ERSAF which has the aims of develop didactic and informative activities, turned to the local community and the numerous hikers visiting the surrounding valleys. Volunteers will take care of the Visitors Centre in Bagni di Masino, promoting environmental education for tourists, concerning the care of environment, the projects and initiatives of both ERSAF and Legambiente, and collaborating in the ordinary maintenance of natural areas. They will also have tasks of animation and environmental education for kids. Parents with some knowledge of Italian are welcome.


Work: different environmental maintenance work and animal monitoring activities.


Accommodation: guest house


Location: Bagni di Masino village is at 35 km from the town of Sondrio and about 40 from Como lake. It's very close to the Swiss border.

Terminal: closest international airports Milano or Bergamo.

ItaLegF03-08  Prim'Alpe (So) Lombardia  20-Aug-08  to  31-Aug-08  ENVI/FAMILY  14 V. Ages  18+ Fee:$500.00 Xtra Fee: $110.00 REPORT REFUND: $50.00
3 GENERATIONS CAMP! It means that some of the families have to be composed also by one or two grandparents.

Participants: 14 adults (parents or grand-parents)+ 6 children (6 to 12 years old)

Project: Prim'Alpe (725 m a.s.l.) is situated in the valley of torrent Ravella, in the heart of the State property Forest of Corni di Canzo and not far from the Como lake. It's surrounded by meadows for pasture and forests with numerous arboreal species. Until 50 years ago the valley was populated by families around three main poles: Prim'Alpe, Second'Alpe and Terz'Alpe, all of the three built along the ancient mule-track that climbs up from the Gajum Sources. Prim'Alpe was the largest and more densely populated of the three. The families will work in making hay and gathering red fruits with scheduled interventions of forest cleaning and preparation of a didactic footpath. During the camp the families will collaborate in the organization of a public event in Prim'Alpe, aimed at inform people about the sustainable projects in Ravella valley.


Work: different environmental maintenance work and animal monitoring activities.
Accommodation: guest house


Location: Prim'Alpe is an isolated location in the area of the town of Lecco.

Terminal: closest international airports Milano or Bergamo.

Slovakia

This project is for Kids Age 3-13 and Adults 18+. Work: Marking tourist paths, bike paths, cleaning the paths. Manual works in the village Motycky. Various handcraft workshops.



Accommodation & Food: Probably in a local hotel. Meals will be provided in the canteen of the hotel. Vegetarian catering is possible.



Location: Motycky is a village very close to Banska Bystrica. It is surrounded by beautiful mountains and nature.



Travel: Airport, bus and train station in Bratislava; Motycky bus station.



Remarks: Bring working clothes and gloves, warm clothes, raincoat, strong boots, swimming suit and a smile on your lips ? Also music instruments and songs from your country.



Attention: No alcohol, no drugs

Sweden

SweIal06.2-08 Stockholm  20-Jul-08  to  03-Aug-08  ENVI/PEACE/FAMILY  9 V. Ages  18+ Fee:$300.00

NON-VIOLENT LIVING, (Stockholm)

IAL's local group in Stockholm and Vita Hästen, a small collective of 10 residents, are organising a workcamp to focus on the connection between ecology, non-violence, simple life style, vegetarianism and collective living.


WORK: Partly on the subject of peace education but also includes one week of renovation helping Eco-collective Vita Hästen with exterior house painting, removing an outhouse, window repair and gardening.


STUDY: Discussion evenings, study visits and films involving local associations. Training in pacifist models of non violent conflict resolution will be given at an introductory workshop and these skills are to be used in a public event at the end of the camp.


ACCOMODATION: Simple conditions, on mattresses partly in the eco-collective house, partly to be determined.


QUALIFICATIONS: strong interest in ecology, non-violence, simple life style, vegetarianism and collective living desirable. Street theatre, performance, renovation and cooking skills especially welcome.


COMMENT: Wheelchair accessibility difficult. Families with children welcome. The camp food, to be prepared by the volunteers, will be vegan and/or vegetarian. Opportunities to participate in morning yoga workshops.

This camp is a call for the families or single parents who would like to participate in a work camp with their children. Accommodation will be more comfortable comparing the other work camps and special activities will be arranged for the kids.

W: Cleaning the beach to create a public awareness about the pollution.

A: In the guest house of the municipality. There will be big rooms reserved for the kids, mothers and fathers separately.

F: Will be supplied by the municipality.

LA: English.

LO: Zeytinli is a seaside town by the Aegean coast. It is in the north west of Turkey. The nearest city is Balikesir.

T: Istanbul.

Extra Fee: 50 € per person. (About $75 USD)

GENCTUR is flexible & we can make exceptions about the age limits. Children under 5 are not charged the extra fee.

SIERRA FRIENDS CENTER is a residential educational institution focusing on peace, social justice and sustainable living, under the care of the Society of Friends (Quakers). Family work camp is a time to work alongside others who believe in the possibility of a peaceful, creative world.

WORK: Play music, clear brush, learn folk dances, pick blackberries, put on new roofs, swim in the Yuba River, dig in the garden, create delicious meals, paint buildings and look at the spectacular night sky.

LOCATION: Nevada City, California, 1 1/2-hour East of Sacramento.

TERMINAL: Sacramento, CA.

ACCOMODATION: Shared cabins, central bathhouse, and excellent organic vegetarian meals in our dining hall.

Vanuatu

VanIvfp6.1-08 Marou, Vanuatu 01-Aug-08 to 30-Sep-08 MIXED-AGE/FAMILY 12V. AGES 18+ F:$300.00 XTRA fee: $182.00 R.REFUND: $50.00

Marou Village, Emao Island, 1.5 hours from the capital, Port Vila. Emao is a small island composed of six different communities, Marou being largest with a population of 181. There is a marine conservation area in the village.

W: Volunteers will work with the community on three projects:

1. Lay up stones at the seaside for cyclone protection.

2. Dive in the lagoon to remove plastic bags, and remove ‘crown of thorns’ star-fish from the reef.

3. Assist with building of an additional classroom.

A: Communal hut, very basic with no electricity, water must be carried by bucket for washing and for flushing toilets. Vols should bring camping mattress and sleeping bag.

X: Family camp: There will be the opportunity for parents to bring children (total 4 children for the camp).Volunteers will be required to sign a ‘work with children’ form or supply a police record check.

Study theme: Sustainability, waste management and recycling, global warming.

VFP Extra cost (to be paid upon arrival): 125 Euro ( $182 USD) which must be paid in local currency (Vatu 17,250) on arrival. This fee will pay for your food, accommodation, insurance, workcamp leader and internal fares, and a small proportion will go towards the further development of workcamps in Vanuatu.

PLEASE BE AWARE IF YOU ARE FAMILY REGISTERING FOR THIS PROJECT THAT THE VFP REGISTRATION FEE FOR A FAMILY REGARDLESS OF SIZE IS $500 USD PLUS ANY EXTRA FEE THAT IS LISTED.
