ThaGwy011-06  Amnat Charoen  02-Jan-06  to  15-Jan-06  TEACH/ENVI  15 V. Ages  18+ Fee:$250.00 Xtra Fee: $170.00 REPORT REFUND: $75.00

Place: Amnat Charoen Province, Northeastern Thailand Type of Camp: Forest protection, teaching English, environmental subjects and communication Background:  During this project, you will stay in a forest monastery. In the monastery everything revolves around pure Buddhism and forest conservation. This means working to protect the surrounding forest, working in an ecological friendly manner, and putting no value on possessions. Here, everybody is a volunteer, wears the same clothes, wears no shoes, eats together, prepares the meals together and works together. No vices are tolerated, including smoking, drinking (alcohol and coffee) and laziness. No lies will be told. This way of life can be difficult for outsiders but will be a very pure experience for all that are willing to learn and come with open mind and warm heart. The warmth of the people in the community will be a lifetime experience!

Work: The work will focus on the principles of forest protection as practiced by the members of this community. There will be discussions and explanations and your input is very much welcome. Besides this we will join in on daily life, which means teaching in the community's school, practicing meditation, preparing meals together and helping out wherever we can. If you're interested, it is possible to live with the villagers. Upon arrival in the camp, the workcamp leader will explain the program. Next to the 'work' schedule the workcamp leader will also take time to teach you some Thai language and inform you about Thai culture, behavior and habits.

Accommodation: With the forest community, the volunteers will reside in a separate house dormitory style (with the men and women staying in different houses). Volunteers should bring a mosquito net, because we can’t guarantee that they’ll be available here. Mattresses are available. There will be a lot of interaction with the foresters and their families and home-stay can be part of the program. In the village you will do home-stay with local families.

Location: The location is very rural, very close to Laos and Kampuchea.

Qualification: The desire to learn about forest conservation is of course necessary. Your ability to see the importance of the social and religious aspect of the project besides the actual manual work is important to enjoy this camp to the fullest! Return to the calendar for an overview of the camps on date.

ThaGwy012-06  Songkhla 1  02-Jan-06  to  15-Jan-06  TEACH  15 V. Ages  18+ Fee:$250.00 Xtra Fee: $170.00 REPORT REFUND: $75.00

Type of camp: English teaching. Background: This camp operates from one of Greenway's beautiful base camps. The aims of this camp are to develop friendship between the participants and the local students at the schools and to teach them English, and more importantly, let them meet people from other parts of the world in order to broaden their horizons. You will see rural Thailand and have an opportunity to reside in a small village with the villagers and students in their home. You may expect visits from local villagers at the camp. W: The camp will consist of two weeks spent interacting informally with the local people in the village and in schools. The volunteers learn about the work and daily life of the villagers in this area and can go on excursions near the campsite. The aim is to have fun (sanuk) together, learn more about each other's cultures and set a good basis for future activities. This camp takes a non-formal approach to teaching. This means that, when you teach in the school, you will have to conform to the local teaching methods or style, but you will be free to choose your own way of teaching and may bring your own ideas into class. Please understand that your methods for teaching are less important than your attitude towards the students. Also, the subject of the teaching can alter, depending on current projects in the camp and might include, for example, environmental issues. Nobody expects you to teach the students to speak English fluently in two weeks. Everyone involved considers it more important for the children to have personal contact with foreigners and to 'open up' with them. A: You will be staying in dormitory-style accommodations. Conditions are simple but will serve your basic needs. The food will be vegetarian. In this camp, you we strongly discourage drinking and smoking. Location:  Place: Khrong Hoykrong, Songkhla Province, Southern Thailand. This camp is located approximately 20 km from the city of Had Yai, at Greenway's headquarters. It is a beautiful garden complex, located in rural southern Thailand, surrounded by rubber tree plantations. Qualification: You should love children, as you will be surrounded by loads of them most of the time. The ability to teach independently and creatively is a must, and you should come up with ideas for children's activities before coming.

ThaGwy022-06  Chieng Rai AFEC  09-Jan-06  to  24-Jan-06  SOCIAL/MANUAL  15 V. Ages  18+ Fee:$250.00 Xtra Fee: $170.00 REPORT REFUND: $75.00

Place: Different villages in the mountains, Chieng Rai Province, Northern Thailand

Type of camp: hill tribes, Akha culture Background: Although more than 90% of Thai nationals belong to the same ethnic group, there are a few uniquely different hill tribes that stay or move along the Thai borders with Burma and Laos. One of the most colorful cultures is the Akha, which can be found in the hills in Northern Thailand. Some of them have Thai citizenship, some not; they are merely tolerated by the government and often accused of opium growing and/or forest depletion. Their relative isolation in the hills has helped to preserve their particular culture but now also poses a threat as their education level is low and their sources of information (an understanding of AIDS, for example) are limited. Together with local NGOs, we are trying to preserve the Akha culture by helping with practical matters while at the same time giving young Akha students access to education. In total, about 50 Akha students live and study at two centers in the city of Chieng Rai, where are educated about their cultural heritage. This is done in an attempt to preserve it by having the next generation bring their knowledge back to the villages. W: The camp will consist of studying the Akha culture while working with the villagers on their land and teaching in their schools. Requires flexibility about what work will be done and patience with scheduling. The work will take place in villages surrounded by beautiful mountains, isolated from the rest of the world. A: is in the homes of Akha families in the villages. L: The camp will be held in Chieng Rai (meeting point) and the surrounding mountains all the way to the borders, arguably one of the most beautiful locations in Thailand! The influence of the hill tribes and nearby Burma and China shapes the culture here. Qualification: Interest in social and cultural work

ThaGwy031-06  Buriram  16-Jan-06  to  29-Jan-06  TEACH  15 V. Ages  18+ Fee:$250.00 Xtra Fee: $170.00 REPORT REFUND: $75.00

Place: Buriram  Province, Northeastern Thailand Background: This camp is located in a small village where people make a living from rice and sugarcane farming. It is a poor region of Thailand, near Buriram, with a strong influence from Issan culture. Other than farming and some silk production, there are few opportunities for the young people to make money in the area, and so many go to the cities to perform unskilled labor. This camp hopes to improve the local children's English so that they might be able to get better jobs, and to help expand their horizons by meeting international volunteers. As a part of this camp, you will experience life in rural Thailand, and may also see how (and perhaps help) your neighbors harvest silk and/or work in their fields. Work: The project will consist of working with local students at schools or other places (like the village or a temple), depending on the program, holidays and current needs. The students will be between 7 and 18 years old. This camp takes a non-formal approach to teaching. This means that, when you teach in the school, you will not have to conform to the local teaching methods or style, but you will be free to choose your own way of teaching and may bring your own ideas into class. Please understand that your methods for teaching are less important than your attitude towards the students. Nobody expects you to teach the students to speak English fluently in two weeks. Everyone involved considers it more important for the children to have personal contact with foreigners and to 'open up' with them. Accommodation: The accommodation will be a simple, dormitory-style arrangement in home-stays with families in the village. Volunteers should bring their own sleeping-mat and mosquito net as not all families can provide this.

Location: The village is in Buriram province where people make a living from rice and sugarcane farming, supplemented with silk production. Not really a place with an exciting nightlife! The center is very close to the village. Beautiful forests can be found at 40-50 km away in different directions, and there are National Parks in this area, too. Qualification: No special qualifications are necessary. You may need communication skills beyond language; music can especially be a great way of communicating so bring your own songs and instruments!

This camp hopes to improve the local children's English so that they might be able to get better jobs, and to help expand their horizons by meeting international volunteers. W:  This program is all about teaching languages! Of course the primary focus is on the English language, but Thai people are also interested in getting an introduction to other foreign languages like French and Japanese. The project will consist of working with local students at schools (we have strong relationships with several primary, secondary, and high schools). The students will be between 7 and 18 years old. Type of camp: environmental care in the form of ecotourism Background: Until recently, many people from this area relied on (illegal) logging and hunting for income. Local people have begun to realize that this way of life is not sustainable, and so greatly reduced the amount of logging and begun to collect guns to stop hunting. Villagers are now looking at tourism to help bring income to the area, but they have no experience with this.  Work Participants in this camp will be working with villagers to help them understand how to cater to eco-friendly tourists. You are a milestone on their road towards effective environmental preservation, and will demonstrate how it can bring in money for their village. Tourism is inevitable and does not need to have the negative impact on the environment and culture that we see so often. By organizing small scale tourism in an environmentally friendly and culturally sensitive manner, negative effects on the local communities can be minimized, and eco tourism can have a positive effect on a community. A large part of this project will be demonstrating to villagers the value of their environment and culture, and the importance of taking care of these things. Please bring ideas and give the villagers some idea about what tourists (ecotourists!) expect and need for a pleasant stay. Be reminded that the work is largely designed to facilitate discussion, so try to work on your communication skills and build up friendships. There is no rush to finish anything quickly. This camp hopes to strengthen awareness in the community and also to create understanding and respect for the environment. Most villagers are encouraged by the presence of the volunteers, and progress has already been made. For example, they now understand how important it is to keep the village clean and that 'wild animals' (be they birds, squirrels, monkeys or bears) belong in the forest and not in the home. A: You will be staying in the homes of villagers, and at the Eco-House center in dormitory accommodations. Conditions are simple and the sleeping place will be an empty room.  L: Place: Khrong Hoykrong, Songkhla Province, South of Thailand This camp is located approximately 20 km from the city of Had Yai, at Greenway's headquarters. It is a beautiful garden complex, located in rural southern Thailand, surrounded by rubber tree plantations.  Qualification: Volunteers are expected to have some ideas formed about ecotourism. They should be interested in getting to know the life in the village as well as in the forest.

ThaGwy061-06  Prachinburi Kao Yai Natl Park  06-Feb-06  to  19-Feb-06  ENVI/AGRI  15 V. Ages  18+ Fee:$250.00 Xtra Fee: $170.00 REPORT REFUND: $75.00

Place: Kao Yai National Park, Nakorn Ratchasima Province, Northeastern Thailand

Type of camp: wildlife and forest protection through social efforts Background: The project will consist of working for two weeks in one of Thailand's largest national parks, the Kao Yai National Park. Though located only 250 km from Bangkok, it still largely pristine and unspoiled. Tigers, elephants, wild bulls and many other large and smaller species of animals roam free through the forests. The biggest threat to the National Park is humans. The people living in villages surrounding the park are poor and often make their living by going into the forest illegally to cut the plants and kill the animals to sell on the black market. The National Park is trying to change this with the Kao Yai Conservation Project (KYCP) which has three teams; 1. a patrol team that protects wildlife from poachers 2. a scientific team that counts animal population to measure the park's biological health 3. a community outreach team that works with local children and villagers The community outreach team organizes youth camps to teach the children about the forest and the effects of poaching. Through these camps, the rangers learned that the people in the village were interested in farming (chickens, vegetables, mushrooms and insects) as an alternative to poaching. In 2000, the project began and two rangers were placed in each of the three villages. The initial materials to build four farms were brought in and farming began. Currently, KYCP is investing a lot of money and work in these three villages and the project is a role model for many other national parks. It is a difficult project, however. The people living in the village are poor and many of them are not interested in working, while others who are interested do not have much knowledge about farming. All good ideas for improvement of the work and the village are more then welcome. If you introduce a new idea do not be disappointed if the villagers and even the rangers do not understand at first. Realize that this is new to them, and that they are eager to learn. You will be able to make everything clear with patience, and you can be assured that good ideas will followed up in subsequent camps. Work: For one week, you will be working with the rangers close to the park's headquarters. You will be helping them with tasks such as making a path. While helping the rangers with their work, you will learn a lot about the park's wildlife and natural splendors. You will be spending the second week in one of the villages with rangers. Here, you will work side by side with the locals on their farms. The most important thing that we can do is to stimulate the people to work and show them how important it is, by checking in regularly and showing interest in their project. Your work also includes imparting the rangers and villagers with a sense of pride in their work to preserve these precious forests. Be liberal with your compliments, and enjoy the company of the rangers and villagers. This is part of the project! A: The accommodations in the camp and in the village are very basic. You will be staying in dormitory style accommodations, as well as in the home of one of the villagers. Volunteers should bring their own mattress or hammock and mosquito net. L: The camp will be held more than 40 km south of Nakorn Ratchasima, the gateway to Northeastern Thailand. The camp is only about 200 km from Bangkok (meeting point), but looking at the scenery you'd never guess that. the National Park is a beautiful, deep forest with a rich diversity of flora and fauna. Q: Deep respect for the environment and the ambition to work on improving it in a socially active way. . Participants cannot be afraid to get their hands dirty and do physically demanding work such as cutting wood, walking long trails, etc. The problems of the park should be considered beforehand. Participation in discussions about this is expected. Furthermore, any ideas for educational activities about the environment that we can organize in the village are more then welcome!

THE AIMS OF THE WORKCAMP We have empathy with  last year's catastrophic tsunami. Try to work with the youth in a socially active way. All kinds of problems of youth or orphans is an aim already. Furthermore, any ideas for educational activities about the youth that we can organize in the village are more then welcome!  BACKGROUND The Thai government did a lot for their own people in the hitted area after the tsunami. They were active in bigger scaled project done by International NGOs and Companies. Almost the whole tsunami related areas in Thailand are recovered and developed. Unfortunately the Thai Government can’t heal all wounds. This is why we try to do a little by volunteering work and our workcamps. After the tsunami Greenway was active in Ranong to setup small-scale projects related to rehabilitation and development of the local economy. More then 400 Volunteers gave their support to Ranong Province. WORK: Last year we started a tsunami orphan's project. We were involved small scaled manual development and supported local initiatives. We attend to give our support to these projects that will benefit the future of children. Some camps we will teach English in school, other camps we are involved with art project.  FREE TIME There will be free time and can be used for your personal activities like washing clothes, writing letters or just resting. But it also can be used building up a strong relation with the other volunteers and then again with the family and friends of the family with which you are staying. Usually the children in the village will love to engage in ‘practicing English’ with you.  In the evenings there will be ample time for discussions and music making. Thai people love to sing and dance.  As most of the villagers support the program we will not disturb neighbors.  In this camp, we do not encourage any alcohol drinking and it should be understood that alcohol use should be limited at all times. Behave at all times as a guest and be a sample for the youth you are working with.  On the weekends the group can stay at the camp or may decide to go sightseeing (at your own cost). In the first week you will have the opportunity to learn aboutthe possibilities and make plans for this according to your own interest.  ACCOMMODATION You will stay in both dormitory style accommodation and in village homes and tents. Conditions are simple and the sleeping place will be ‘an empty room’, serving as a sleeping room. We will try to arrange that one volunteer can live with his/her own family. Be prepared for hand washing your own clothes. Try to be environmentally friendly as possible and use resources with care and modestly. Especially because your behavior is “part of the project’; you are showing how ideal volunteer will/should behave!

Type of camp: social and environmental. Background: The project will consist of working closely with local people to clean up and improve the May Nam Noy (Noy River) and the canals in the vicinity. The people in the area are dependent on the Noy River water for agricultural, household and sanitation purposes. The project will help the villagers understand the importance of a clean river and serve as an example to the entire district. W: The camp will consist of two weeks interacting with the local people in the village. The volunteers will participate in the work and daily life of the local villagers in order to teach them better environmental practices. Volunteers will then work together with the villagers to change sanitation and waste disposal practices. Additional projects will include watershed preservation, tree-planting and improving the natural vegetation. Some informal teaching about environmental issues will help the villagers sustain and build upon the progress made during the camp. It is expected that the volunteers bring creative ideas for environmental and organizational strategies. The aim is to have fun (sanuk) together, learn more about each other's cultures and set a good basis for future activities while helping the village. A: The accommodation will be a simple, dormitory-style arrangement in the local school and in home-stays with families in the village. Volunteers should bring their own sleeping-mat and mosquito net as not all families can provide this.  L: Place: Tachang district, Singburi Province, Central Thailand You can find this camp in a rural area near the city of Singburi, about 150 km north of the Bangkok.  Qualification: Participants cannot be afraid to get their hands dirty and do physically demanding work such as hauling garbage, planting trees, clearing riverbanks etc. You must be willing to participate in the clean-up of the river and the creation of a "garden spot," working side by side with the villagers.

ThaGwy161-06  Amnat Charoen  17-Apr-06  to  30-Apr-06  TEACH/ENVI  15 V.

ThaGwy171-06  Songkhla 2  24-Apr-06  to  14-May-06  ENVI/SOCIAL  15 V. Ages  18+ Fee:$250.00 Xtra Fee: $170.00 REPORT REFUND: $75.00

Type of Camp: environmental friendly agriculture, teaching English, environmental subjects and communication Background: During this project, volunteers will spend two weeks in two different locations. One week will be at the Ratchathani Asoke camp and one can be at the Greenway center in the village of Ban Nakhor. Both locations are focused on agriculture, teaching and farming. The first location: Ratachani Asoke Ratchathani Asoke is a Buddhist community that separate themselves from the normal Buddhism in Thailand. In the village everything revolves about "the good way of living" and pure Buddhism. This means utilizing sustainable agriculture, working in an ecological friendly manner, and putting no value on possessions. Here, everybody is a volunteer, wears the same clothes, wears no shoes, eats together, prepares the meals together (2 times a day) and works together. The second location: Ban Nakhor The second location is in a village near Ubon Ratchathani. Here you will live and work in the village together with the Greenway Long-Term Volunteers and you will participate in the projects they have started, including English teaching in the local schools. W: The work at the first location will focus on the principles of alternative agriculture as practiced by the Asoke community. There will be discussions and explanations and your input is very much welcome. Besides this we will join in on daily life, which means teaching in the community's school, preparing meals together and helping out wherever we can. If you're interested, it is possible to live with the villagers that cooperate in this project. At the second location you will work with the Greenway Long-Term Volunteers and local people teaching English and environmental subjects. The final program depends on the weather, school holidays, and the workcamp leader, special Buddhist holidays, and special activities in schools that take place during your camp. Upon arrival in the camp, the workcamp leader will explain the program. Next to the 'work' schedule the workcamp leader will also take time to teach you some Thai language and inform you about Thai culture, behavior and habits. A: With the Asoke group, the volunteers will reside in a separate house dormitory style (with the men and women staying in different houses). Volunteers should bring a mosquito net and a mattress if they need this. There will be a lot of interaction with the farmers and their families and home-stay can be part of the program. In the village you will do home-stay with local families. Mosquito nets should be taken, because not all Thai families use them. Mattresses are available. Location: Place: Warim Chamrab,  Province, Northeastern Thailand The location is very rural, very close to Laos and Kampuchea. Those traveling by air can use the Ubon Rachathani airport (15 km from the campsite; pickup will be arranged) and train travelers should disembark at Ubon Rachathani-Warin Chamrap station. Qualification: The desire to learn about sustainable agriculture is of course necessary.

ThaGwy272-06  Ubon Ratchathani  03-Jul-06  to  16-Jul-06  ENVI/AGRI/TEACH  15 V. Ages  18+ Fee:$250.00 Xtra Fee: $170.00 REPORT REFUND: $75.00

Your ability to see the importance of the social and religious aspect of the project besides the actual manual work is important to enjoy this camp to the fullest! ThaGwy273-06  Prachinburi Kao Yai Natl Park  03-Jul-06  to  16-Jul-06  ENVI/AGRI  15 V.

ThaGwy283-06  Phayak in Maha Sarakam Province  10-Jul-06  to  23-Jul-06  TEACH  15 V. Ages  18+ Fee:$250.00 Xtra Fee: $170.00 REPORT REFUND: $75.00

Background: This camp is located in a small village where people make a living from rice and sugarcane farming. It is a poor region of Thailand, with a strong influence from Issan culture. Other than farming and some silk production, there are few opportunities for the young people to make money in the area, and so many go to the cities to perform unskilled labor. This camp hopes to improve the local children's English so that they might be able to get better jobs, and to help expand their horizons by meeting international volunteers. A: The accommodation will be a simple, dormitory-style arrangement in the center and in home-stays with families in the village. Volunteers should bring their own sleeping-mat and mosquito net as not all families can provide this. Location: The village is in Maha Sarakam province where people make a living from rice and sugarcane farming, supplemented with silk production. Payakkhaphum Pisai is situated between the two big cities of Masarakam and Buriram, close enough so that it is easy to arrange a sightseeing trip to either city. The center is in the middle of the village. Qualification : No special qualifications are necessary. You may need communication skills beyond language; music can especially be a great way of communicating so bring your own songs and instruments!

ThaGwy282-06  Phattalung Southern Thailand  10-Jul-06  to  23-Jul-06  ENVI  15 V. Ages  18+ Fee:$250.00 Xtra Fee: $170.00 REPORT REFUND: $75.00

Type of camp: environmental preservation in the form of ecotourism Background: Until recently, many people from this area relied on (illegal) logging and hunting for income. Local people have begun to realize that this way of life is not sustainable, and so greatly reduced the amount of logging and begun to collect guns to stop hunting. Villagers are now looking at tourism to help bring income to the area, but they have no experience with this. Work: Participants in this camp will be working with villagers to help them understand how to cater to eco-friendly tourists. You are a milestone on their road towards effective environmental preservation, and will demonstrate how it can bring in money for their village. Tourism is inevitable and does not need to have the negative impact on the environment and culture that we see so often. By organizing small scale tourism in an environmentally friendly and culturally sensitive manner, negative effects on the local communities can be minimized, and eco-tourism can have a positive effect on a community.

A: You will be staying in the homes of villagers. Conditions are simple and the sleeping place will be an empty room. Location: The closest larger city is Phattalung, nearly 900 km south from Bangkok and the easiest connection by train. Volunteers who would like to fly from Bangkok to Southern Thailand can fly to Had Yai. If you get in touch with us in advance, Greenway will assist your travel to the camp site. Qualification: Volunteers are expected to have some ideas formed about ecotourism. The volunteers should be interested in getting to know the life in the village as well as in the forest.

ThaGwy284-06  Chieng Rai AFEC  10-Jul-06  to  23-Jul-06  SOCIAL/MANUAL  15 V.

ThaGwy294-06  Ranong  17-Jul-06  to  30-Jul-06  SOCIAL/YOUTH/KIDS  15 V. Ages  18+ Fee:$250.00 Xtra Fee: $170.00 REPORT REFUND: $75.00
