Location: For the fifith year Verona will host international volunteers during the entire year. Verona is a very famous city (do you remember Romeo & Juliet by Shakespeare???) In the north east of Italy; it is a very touristic place with a long history and culture; rich of historical monuments, first of all the famous arena (the ancient roman theatre). Even it is a great example of fortified town, in fact the walls and the surrounding area is going to become a national park. Unfortunately some parts of the area are still damaged and abandoned. Legambiente works on two different medium term projects in this town:

1) VILLA BURI: Buri’s villa is situated at the centre of the Adige river’s bend and it’s a monumental palace, with a chapel, some cottages and a majestic landscape-garden, 30 hectares big, where a large part of it is planted with ancient and precious trees. In September 2001 the management of the villa was given to a no-profit group of associations which have created a project to use and renovate the structure. The main goal of this project is to affirm a culture of peace, to research a bearable  and solid economy, and a right relationship with the environment. To make it possible  it is necessary to suggest concrete and visible stimulus, symbolical but clear in order to develop all together a cultural articulated and qualified activity related to peace, environment and an economy of justice. It is desiderable to form a space of concreteness and effectiveness to the obligations of those many realities who spend a lot of energies and passion on the multiple faces of solidarity, offering a place that produces new experiences of dialogue and confrontation between peoples. In the planned activities there are some educational and formative ones: meetings, expositions, training courses, the opening of the park, parties, manifestations, events where the international volunteers can take part. The final goal is to restore a part of the park inside four bastions of the XIX cent. And remains walls from XVI cent. Volunteers will work on the custody of the park (opening and closing the gates), gardening  (taking care of the botanic garden) and cleaning, everything coordinated by a responsible. Even they will collaborate with the local group of Legambiente in other activities. They will work about 30 hours per week.  Accommodation: house inside the park or the villa (two bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen, a little dining room). 2) PARK OF WALLS: Legambiente is deeply involved in the restoration and revaluation of a great green space around. The final goal is to restore a part of the park inside four bastions of the XIX cent. and remains walls from XVI cent. In this area Legambiente is deeply involved in action of restoration and revaluation of a great green space. The hard job has just started. The aim is to rehabilitate the area comprehended among four bastions of ‘800 and remains of walls of ‘500 and make it became a Park. Sometimes, these four bastions host drug addicts, prostitutes or homeless people which find place to stay for some hours. It’s not dangerous, and you will not work alone. There is a technician responsible for the maintenance of the Park and another person responsible for volunteers and their integration in the project and in the town. Volunteers will work on the custody of the Park (opening and closing the gates), gardening and cleaning, coordinated by technicians. They will also collaborate with the local group of Legambiente in other activities as guiding tourists through the park and other Legambiente projects.  They will work about 30 hours per week. Accommodation: house inside the Park “Raggio di Sole”, very close to the centre of the town (two bedrooms, two bathrooms, kitchen, big tv-room for meeting with all volunteers, open air area when the weather is good…). Both projects’ work is similar and even if they are hosted in different buildings (only three kilometres distance) volunteers will be in continuous contact. A volunteer interested in taking part in a MTV project can choose Verona or apply with a preference for Villa Buri or Park of walls. In the case they choose simply Verona, the local group together to the volunteers will decided the place of stay, with possibility of changing project during the three months.  Terminal: closest airport and railway station are in Verona. Important note: volunteers are expected not to be older than 40 years old.

Project description: The organisation  The “Cavallo Bianco” association works with mentally and physically disabled people in Rome. One of their main goals is to help those people to find employment and to take part in the civil society development. Local volunteers are a very colorful and reach group of people working and developing projects together since long time, they regularly meet once per week in their roman office and they develop several artistic activities through the pedagogic theatre methodology. Since about 9 years they also cooperate with a Byelarussian orphanage in order to host a group of mentally and/or physically disabled children in Italy for five weeks at the beginning of summer time. The hosted group is composed by 15 children, two teachers and a translator (with the task to help the communication between the children and the locals).

Considering the particular target of the organisation, Cavallo Bianco stresses the real possibility to communicate and interact through non verbal and non formal communication and, therefore, support all those projects that include people from very different backgrounds and life experiences.

Cavallo Bianco decided together with Yap-Italia to involve in the development of the project local volunteers, the group of people they usually work with, and international volunteers (to be noticed: neither the local volunteers nor the children speak English and it is important to be ready to communicate in non formal and non verbal ways in order to fully participate to the project).

Geographical context and project location

Cinecittà is one of the twelve neighborhoods of Rome, apart from being the local environment where Yap Italy is developing its daily life activities, Cinecittà is also a neighborhood in the outskirts of Rome where many other associations, groups, and social centres are trying to improve the quality of life for all the people living there and Cavallo Bianco is one of them.

The project will take place in the premises of a local church where the children are hosted, have lunch and dinner, the group will have the rehearsals and the final party and performance will take place. No religious involvement will be asked to the volunteer and the project is open to everybody. The activities This year, it will be the fifth edition of the project. Past year it hosted two groups of internationals through the realisation of a workcamp and the presence of volunteers was recognised as very important and interesting. One of the aim of the project is to create and to develop a human link and relationship in between the different persons involved. Cavallo Bianco stands for integration and participation of all into the community therefore each person will have to support all the others.   Volunteers will take part in all the activities connected to the project from the spare time to the cleaning. They will organise games and workshops, will take the children to excursions and to the beach, will clean the space where children live and sleep, cook for the children, fully support local volunteers in dealing with the group and will commit themselves to be part of the all project.

The volunteers, the local association and the children will organise a theatre performance and they will play it together one of the last nights of the workcamp (rehearsals will also be part of the activities connected to the project).

Children can be affected by chronic illnesses but there will be people responsible and able to deal with all of them (volunteers will be informed once on the spot or just before the project about those special situation and will know how to behave in any situation).

It can happen that volunteers are in charge of different activities. The local coordinator will establish shifts in order to involve everybody in all the activities according to the possibilities. The children are in Italy together with two Belarusian mentors, the role of these mentors does not have any influence on the activities volunteers will develop even though they are responsible for the children.

Upon arrival the international group will meet with the local group and it will get to know the draft program (in fact the program can not be establish with absolute certitude at the beginning of the project because several activities and excursions depend on weather conditions or local possibilities that can not always be checked before the activity itself). The program can be changed according to the evolution of the project, weather, children’s needs etc. None of these changes are done in order to create problems or because there is no organization but because of the will to be flexible and to create a human relationship with all the persons involved.

Timing

TO BE ESTABLISHED

Free time: There is no day when the children are free so that it is not possible to establish before hand when volunteers will be free. It will be discussed and organised upon arrival together with the coordinator and the local volunteers (please consider it when applying). Generally speaking you will have free afternoons or mornings during the week and one day free in the week ends, but we can not state now how it will be organised and established with the local coordinator.

 Technicalities and finances

Insurance: during the project you will be covered by Yap It insurance but please provide your self with health and accidents insurance before leaving your countries.

Visa: we will accomplish all the procedures together with your sending organisation, but please, make sure to be available in order to accomplish all the procedures on time (go to the embassy if needed etc etc)!

Travel: you will need to cover your travel expenses. Further information about the meeting point and Italy will follow with next mailing.

Language: Italian, English and Russian will be all languages of the project. Children mainly speak Russian, as well as the teachers. Local volunteers are mainly Italian speakers, YAP local volunteers and the coordinator speak Italian and English. Consider that in Italy there are few English speakers and that in Cinecittà is almost impossible to find some of them (except YAP volunteers). You can, though, expect to have lot of nice moments and attentions from all of them!!!

Board: Yap Italy and Cavallo Bianco will guarantee your board during the project. In particular: you will have lunch and dinner together with the group in the church where the children are hosted, food will be provided according to Italian traditions and children’s needs (please get ready to have pasta, pizza, salad, Italian food for lunch and dinner and consider that no special needs can be taken into consideration in this project. We do apologise with vegetarians or volunteers with special needs but during the project and considering the organisation of the supplies, it is impossible to foresee and organise the preparation of special meals in this context). The organizers will not take into consideration any complains about food and Italian traditions: an international voluntary service project also means adaptation and intercultural learning, whether in Italy or abroad.

Lodging: you will be lodged in YAP Italy’s flat, just nearby the project location.

Please note that your lodging will be provided in the framework of Yap It’ activities and that you will live with the group of volunteers that are already sharing the space and the common life. As for all the others you will be asked to participate to the daily work and house keeping. Your accommodation will be provided in a shared room. If you are looking for privacy and time for yourself, please do not apply! But if you are looking for an interesting intercultural and personal experience this is the project for you!

Introduction: Legambiente is running since 1999 the ex-Convent San Giorgio, a Volunteering Permanent Centre that has been hosting hundreds of volunteers in different occasions (national and international work-camps, European Volunteering Service,…). The Convent is situated in the region of Abruzzo, centre of Italy, about 150 km away from Rome. It has been fully restored by the local institution Mountain Community and we furnished it following as much as possible “static free” standards. The project aims to bring new economic, tourist and especially cultural and spiritual movements in an area quite isolated. It deals with sustainable living, no waste, recycling and clever use of all energies (human included).  The role of volunteers during these years has been fundamental, and all people passing through the Convent for different occasions as seminars, stages, parties have contributed to bring on these activities. Themes as peace, solidarity, ecologism are linked. For the realisation of the idea it is necessary that different intellectual and spiritual forces, positive thought and energies flow in the same direction.  The Project The project based on the Convent San Giorgio has different working situations: -the garden: most of the food we eat comes from our garden where we practice organic cultivation and experiment new techniques for “clean agriculture” as permaculture -work in the village: during these years we have re-opened and maintained many paths which in the past were the ways to reach the villages in the valley; cleaned fountains which were the only source of water for people living year; collaborated with farmers of the village in little jobs in their farms (as cleaning stables from manure or from straw, necessary for our garden). -collaboration with the Regional Park of Sirente-Velino: in these five years we have been working with experts from the Park to count animals (dears and wild-pigs), cleaning areas from different kind of garbage, helping in spreading environmental awareness -work with hosted people: we host every year hundreds of people from different part of the world and of Italy, offering them the occasion to experiment working holidays , seminars or stages(during Summer: yoga, tai-chi, ceramics, shiatsu, permaculture, dances,….), programs of excursions and at the same time a way to experiment the different way of living in the Convent. We work also with physically and mentally disadvantaged people. W: From December to May we will host international volunteers for two weeks. They will take part to the life of the Convent working inside to maintain the structure (cleaning and little carpentry jobs), in the garden, with the animals of our small farm (chicken, ducks, goose, pigeons, rabbits, goats and sheep), on the paths near the village. Project: the Park Adda Nord includes those territories along the river Adda situated on the plain highlands close to Como lake and including the lakes of Garlate and Olginate. The river winds across the narrow banks with typical outcroppings of conglomerate reefs (the so-called "ceppo") and it forms a characteristic landscape where thick woods alternate with more populated areas. The most interesting area is the covered by the wide wetland of the marsh in Brivio. The archaeological and monumental aspects have a special importance, with some hydraulic engineering works dating back to the beginning of the century like Leonardo's locks (Trezzo sull'Adda), the bridge in Paderno, and the industrial village of Crespi d'Adda. Volunteers will work at the environmental maintenance of the cycle-pedestrian paths along the river, between the villages Airuno, Brivio and Imbersago.
