The workcamp 2008 will be the creation of a botanic
garden comprising of medicinal herbs. Purpose: To educate the local children
about our natural remedies, health and the ecology of the environment.
Volunteers will be involved in the implementation of sustainable agriculture:
seedling, planting, researching, and documenting, photographing. Neges projects always have excellent
cultural activities! Location: town of Leogane, approximately 20 miles from
Port au Prince, the capital of Haiti. The workcamp is seeking 8-10 people. Camp
date: August 4-15. All visitors must
arrive on Saturday Aug 2, 2008. All visitors will depart Saturday Aug 16, 2008
Camp fees: $300 which cover excellent local accommodations, including 3 meals
and laundry. Transportation to and from
airport: $100 All applications must be

Theme: Teaching in an Orphanage, a Learning
ExchangeSponsor: Le Foyer des Filles de Dieu, an orphanage for girls, infant to
adult, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. This is a well-functioning residence, school,
and affiliated community medical clinic.
Volunteers requested: One to three people, age 50
plus. Two references required.
Dates: November 30th through December 14th, 2008.
May be extended if requested and if circumstances warrant.
Task: To teach any of a wide range of skills
including English, math,
dress-making, engineering, computer technology,
business, healthprofessions, games, art, reading for pleasure, history,
geology,photography, gardening, dance, music, theater ... The teaching style
may be formal or informal. Mentorship built on sound personal relations with
the children is what counts. Small group setting.
Languages: English or French.
Accommodations: Volunteers will pay for their own
room and board in a comfortable guest house with a constant stream of
interestingvisitors. They will be transported by taxi to Le Foyer each day.
Spending an occasional night at the orphanage itself may be possible.
Leadership: Director of Le Foyer is Mme Paula
Thybulle, a Haitian-American social worker. Staff members will assist. Retired
American child psychologist, Robert Belenky, will the there to help.
Learning Opportunities: Introduction to innovative
school and community programs for children and youth. Visits to programs in
environmental ecology and to a small, mountain village where youngpeople are
well served. Introduction to the Voudon religion. Introduction to Haitian culture through art, dance, and music.
Discussion of economic and political issues. Trips to the beach - sometimes
with the children. Learning the language of Haiti, Creole, as taught us by the children.
Cost: Return trip air transport from the US: This varies
but so far has not been over $1,000, usually considerably less. American
Airlines is the primary carrier. The guest house charges about $35 dollars
pernight for room and two meals. In-country transportation - $10 per day.

is refundable with the
receipt in our office of a reflective report
subsequent to the work campexperience.
Note: This program is unlike any that Volunteers for
Peace has so far
offered. The emphasis is on education, the numbers
of volunteers is
small and the people sought are seniors. We believe
it will offer
remarkable opportunities for service as well as
learning and may soon be the prototype for more programs like it.
