Volunteer Voices
In the summer of 2011, I volunteered through VFP in Peru. I volunteered at Santa Faustina Casa de Hogar in Pachacamac, a girl’s home in a tiny town near Lima. I had a wonderful experience volunteering over all, it was challenging in some ways but that was partly why it was so rewarding.
I was nervous to live with my first host family ever, but they genuinely treated us like family; they fed us delicious meals, got to know each of us, but also gave us plenty of space, they truly enhanced my over all experience.
Tasks varied between cleaning bedrooms and bathrooms, doing dishes, helping in the kitchen, laundry, picking up toys in the yard, picking up the girls from school, supervising girls in the yard; a special project I helped with was organizing their books and creating an inventory. Of course, I developed an attachment with the girls there, they were all so precious and lovable that I looked forward to spending time with them and missed them when I left. My last day was difficult; knowing that I would probably never see the children or women on staff again, brought me to tears.\\\"N. Galas~ Peru 2011
