Everything about my experience at the environmental work camp in Nea Makri through ELIX was amazing! Our camp coordinator Vassalis Paissios was one of the high points of the camp – he is a combination of organized, laid-back, creative, thoughtful, inspiring – and it was his first work camp! I hope he does one again. They told me I was the first American woman to attend a work camp in ELIX, so that made me feel a little bit special. It was fantastic to meet the Elena, the founder of ELIX, and we even had a project director from Turkey on staff, who gave a special presentation on work camps in his country. I was incredibly impressed by the people who came to the work camp. I didn’t know that it was a family camp, and it turned out to be wonderful. We all got along right from the beginning – I just wish the camp were longer. The accommodations were superior, and we were served out of the camp’s cafeteria – on days that didn’t happen, we ate with the camp. Free days were amazing, and on our last free day Vassalis organized an optional outing to a nearby island and the small group that attended had a spectacular day. We suggested putting together a work camp on that island, because we would all come back again. Overall I had a really wonderful experience and plan to do more work camps through VP in the future.\"
