Volunteer Voices

Volunteering on the Spanish island Menorca was one of the best decisions I have made in my life. This was my first work camp, so the entire thing was a new and great experience for me. Ten other volunteers and I stayed in an old house just outside of Ciutadella, one of the two main towns on the island. The house had no telephone, internet or laundry machines, which was actually a wonderful thing because it forced everyone in the camp to be closer and build an even stronger connection. In the mornings, we woke up early to take a bicycle ride to Lithica, a historic quarry on the island. Our jobs were mainly restoration and landscaping; a lot of clearing grass and moving sand, but the job I ended up doing almost every day involved creating a nice sitting area that had a great view of the deeper quarries.

All of us at the camp became so close, actually, that when we all returned home we sent each other all of our pictures and many of us are still in touch! I have plans to visit a girl in Poland from the camp, and invitations to and contacts in many other countries, which is a great thing to have. Overall, I definitely plan on doing more camps through VFP, they are an amazing way to travel and explore cultures, and working for room and board is a very satisfying feeling.\"
