Volunteer Voices

My two week volunteer experience in La Vallee de Jacmel in July of 2010 was invigorating, inspirational, and rewarding. I was the oldest person (57) in my group of 13 volunteers, but my age in no way limited my ability to contribute to the work projects being done. Everyone in my group embraced a level of work that suited her/his physical abilities and was supported by a communal bond that encouraged participation at every level. The emotional impact of our presence, and the hope it expressed, was also palpably felt. I hope I have conveyed some of the intensity and depth of my volunteer experience in Haiti. I have not dwelled on the beauty of the country, nor the ample fellowship among the volunteers, nor the excursions to the waterfall and the beach because my personal commitment was to work for the good of the people there as much as possible. I recommend this project to anyone who is up to the physical challenges described. La Vallee de Jacmel is not the epicenter of misery in Haiti, but, perhaps, it is the epicenter of hope. The work to improve people’s lives there is vital, meaningful, and heartwarmingly appreciated. What more could a volunteer ask for?”
